Why Is My Bass Boomy?

Bass can sound boomy when room modes are strongly excited, strongly sampled at the listening position, or concentrated close together in frequency. Those are only some possible causes; loudspeaker response, boundaries, furnishings, directivity, subwoofer integration, EQ and measurement conditions can also matter.

Boomy bass is an experience, not a diagnosis

Excessive or uneven bass can have several causes. In the part of the problem that a room-mode model can describe, low-frequency modes may be strongly excited by a speaker position, strongly sampled at a listening position, or concentrated close together in frequency.

Those mechanisms are plausible explanations, not a diagnosis from a sentence. Loudspeaker response, boundary construction, furnishings, room openings, directivity, subwoofer integration, equalization and measurement conditions can all matter too.

Listener moves

Only where the room is sampled changes. Which modes are driven stays the same.

Speakers move

Only how strongly each mode is driven changes. Where you sample the room stays the same.

A useful first distinction

If the bass changes with your chair

The listening position may be an important part of the result. Compare candidate positions rather than assuming the room is uniformly loud.

If the bass changes with the speakers

The source position may be changing how strongly modes are excited. Keep the listening position fixed while testing that question.

If placement changes do not settle it

Measurement or other acoustic factors may be needed. A placement model is not a substitute for investigating the real system.

There is no magic 20-centimeter fix

A relatively small change in source or listener position can materially change how modes are excited or sampled, but the direction and size of that change depend on the room and the starting geometry. “Move the speakers 20 cm” is not a responsible universal prescription.
